Chairman Johan Wens

Johan Wens is general practitioner in Belgium since 1986. He works, together with his wife in a GP duo-practice in the northern region of Antwerp.

Johan Wens started working as GP in 1986 in a small practice together with his wife, also a GP. Soon after graduating he joined the scientific association of Flemish GPs (now Domus Medica) where he started some regional prevention projects and the “Diabetes Project Flanders”, as a consequence of the Saint Vincent Declaration. This work resulted in a staff position at the University of Antwerp where he finished a PhD thesis “Behind the borders of evidence… towards a better diabetes care” (pdf link possible, I can sent the full thesis on pdf). His main interests are on “quality of health care delivery in primary health care”, “comprehensiveness” and “patient centeredness”. Besides some chapters in different books, he published different research papers in peer reviewed Journals on diabetes care, and more recently on different topics of chronic and complex health care delivery. He is member of the Belgian National Council for Quality Advancements in Health Care, the High Council for GPs and specialists, and different (inter-)national boards related to the topics of interest.

Johan Wens is author of several papers in national and international peer reviewed journals and reviews manuscripts for a number of highly valued journals. He is leading author of a new validated guideline for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes type 2 in Belgium (to be presented in October 2005).

 

He is examiner for the Inter University Centre for undergraduate training in General Practice.


As board member of PCD Europe ivzw since 2001 he chaired the Scientific Committee of the last conferences in Paris (2003) and Munich (2004). He finished the constitutions of the organisation which now is an international non-profit organisation in accordance with the Belgian Laws. Since 2005, Januray 1st he is treasurer of PCD Europe ivzw.

Dr Francesc Xavier Cos is a general practitioner in Barcelona (Spain) since 1997 currently working as a  Director of Sant Martí Primary Health Centres (Catalonian Health Institute located in the city of Barcelona, managing over 100 professionals with 27 GPs).

XAV02_250He has been member of the GEDAPS  “Primary Care Diabetes Study Group” since 1997, (www.redgedaps.org) founded in 1993 by Prof. JF Cano (GP and Endocrinologist) , together with an enthusiastic group of GPs from The Catalonian Primary Care Society (www.camfic.org).

Mr Guy Rutten
 Prof. Dr. Guy E.H.M. Rutten has been working since 1982 as a general practitioner in a group practice in Beuningen. He defended his PhD thesis on diabetes care in 1989.  Prof. Dr.Guy Rutten was head of the Department of Guidelines development of the Dutch College of GP’s from 1989-1991. In 1998 he was appointed as Professor of Diabetology in Primary Care at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care of the University Medical Center Utrecht. Up to now he has continued working as a GP in his practice two days per week.

His research activities focus on diabetes and infections, diabetes and cardiovascular complications and diabetes primary care. He is (co-)author of more than 60 original articles in (inter)national peer reviewed journals, wrote more than 60 reviewing articles and chapters in textbooks and wrote or edited books on Guidelines, the Patient-Physician-Relationship, Diabetes in Primary Care and the Medical Process as well.He is chair of the Dutch General Practice Diabetes Advisory Group, which he founded, and member of the EASD Postgraduate Committee. He chairs the EASD Study Group on Primary Care Research in Diabetology, and is Editor-in-chief of Primary Care Diabetes.

Eugene Hughes qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1979. He works as a general practitioner in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. In 1996 he was a founder member of Primary Care Diabetes UK. He served on the committee for 6 years, during which time he was involved in conference organisation.
In 2002 he joined the executive of Primary Care Diabetes Europe, and has organised recent conferences in Stockholm and Paris. He has been the editor of Diabetes and Primary Care Journal since it was first published in 1999.

He has written many articles and editorials on diabetes, particularly relating to service delivery and early management of type 2 diabetes, and he continues to lecture widely on diabetes related topics.  He is an external examiner for the University of Portsmouth Certificate in Diabetes Management.

Dr Kleinebreil has been the Vice chairman of the NGO Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE). She is also the project manager of EDIUCAD (home training via satellite for diabetic patients living in remote areas), supported by the french Centre National d’Etudes Spaciales (CNES).She is a member of the board of “Université Numérique Francophone Mondiale” for health care professionals distant training and also serves as the Director of Telemedecine Unit at the European Georges Pompidou Hospital in Paris. From 1990 to 1998, she worked as a short-term consultant for WHO EURO and from 1995 to 2002, she was the Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for diabetes based in Paris.

Imre Rurik graduated in 1979 at Semmelweis Medical University, in Budapest. Worked as urologist till 1989 when he turned to family practice and is working recently in a Budapest suburb, Pesterzsébet.  

He qualified as specialist in urology (1983), general practice (1993) and occupational medicine (1988). He got a Master degree in Helath Services management in 2002 and defended his PhD theses in 2003, on the topic of nutrition of elderly. He published some articles in indexed journals and much more in Hungarian medical journals. Since 1997 he is a senior lecturer at Department of Family Medicine, Semmelweis Univerity Budapest, member the Hungarian Board of Family Pract

Anne-Marie Felton has been a diabetes specialist nurse for over 20 years. Co-founder and Chair of FEND (Federation of European Nurses in Diabetes).

In 1999 appointed Vice President Diabetes UK and is a member of the Diabetes UK Advisory Council since 2002. Currently works within the voluntary sector pro bono and serves as a Trustee of the Novo Nordisk Foundation UK, Beta Cell Trust and the Diabetes Foundation.

Honorary consultant at Queen Mary’s hospital Roehampton.

Member of the Editorial Board of Practical Diabetes International and the Review Board of the International Diabetes Monitor.

Editorial board member of European Diabetes Nursing, official journal of FEND.

Invited presenter at a number international conferences and has a particular interest in Therapeutic Patient Education and is co-author of the WHO TPE report.
